At the moment I spend most of my time on my Facebook account, my Twitter account, my Hyves, my YouTube account and of course Skype & MSN. These are the account I check at least ones a day.

Besides those main ones, I follow blogs through Google Reader; have a MySpace account lying around somewhere, and a Linkin account. I post photos on my Flickr and my Photobucket account, linking interesting links to my del.icio.us. account.

Other accounts include, (yes there are more) my Cu2, Habbo, Hilversums.nu, Sugababes/Superdudes, Picturetrail and my MSNLive account.

Looking at the picture below, you can see I only have subscription to a small amount of the social media sites are available on this web. I’m not saying everybody is as “networked out” as I am, but when is it going to be too much?

A recent report from media analysts Jeremiah Owyang from Forrester was published about the future of the social media and the social web. Owyang explains the current and future state of all these different kind of social media sites that we use.  He explains that the social media eras are split up in the following five generations:

• The era of social relationships (2003 – 2007): People are connected through simple-developed social media websites.
• The era of social functionality (2007 – 2012): On top of these social networks and communities, the social applications are being developed, but people are still excluded into one network.
• The era of social colonization (start 2009): Forrester says that end 2009; people can connect their social identities through different social networks and communities.
• The era of social context (start 2010): People and their network will become recognizable, through their personal social identities and needs.
• The era of social commerce (start 2011): In this phase communities will become more powerful then corporate websites and commerce platforms.

Looking at these different era’s, I think we are still in the era of social relationships. I am still connected to many different social websites, which are not linked in any kind of way. This is very chaotic and unorganized. Hopefully soon kind of era of social colonization will be developed, so we can socialize in different ways but still with one main function. All of all, we can agree the amount of social media sites now a days is overwhelming!

Recently I red an article on RealWire about a new version of the popular Facebook application: GetThemIn. This application consists of a virtual bar, where you can buy your “Facebook Friend” a real drink. The friend will receive a voucher code, and can pick up a drink at a local liquor store. At the moment this application is only available for the UK Facebook users.

Jay Feeney, Founder of GetThemIn explains: “Virtual gifts have proven to be hugely popular on Facebook and we’ve taken this one step further with the GetThemIn application. People can now buy their friends virtual gifts that can easily be exchanged for the real thing. With a GetThemIn participating store within ten minutes of most people in the UK, it’s a really innovative yet simple way of marking a special occasion with a drink between friends,”

Personally, I am concerned about the ethical reasons behind this. Is it a smart thing to make a virtual Facebook bar, a real case senario? If you want to buy somebody a drink, why not just go to a bar, and actually meet the person and buy them a drink? Atlest then you are sure, the person is above 18. The whole point of buying somebody a drink, is to sociolise (in real life then).

Maybe in a few months, we can buy pets through Facebook. Who knows?

Recently The Global Language Monitor announced that Twitter is the number one used word in the English language in 2009, followed by Obama in 2nd, and H1N1 on 3rd place. But what is this is twitter obsession?

Tweet, Twit, Twitter? We have all heard something about this new socializing website called Twitter. People such as Barack Obama, Aston Kutcher and even simple people such as myself have made tweeting one of their daily  activities.

On Twitter.com you can make an account with your own username, after signing up you can post short message about yourself or what you are doing at the particular moment. You can also follow other people, and see what they do.

I, personally, really enjoy Twitter. Since I moved to Holland, I can keep my friends up to date with my studies and personal life in Utrecht and visa versa. This new social media is easy to use for all ages, even my mother and grandmother are hooked! But because you have so much freedom in typing whatever you feel like, something people regret something after posting it. For example Dutch singer Anouk posted last week a racist comment about the Dutch Santa Claus, within hours it was on the news. This proves how quick the ball rolls after you post something on the internet.

One way I do like Twitter, and how easy and quick it can reach other people all over the world, but on the other hand it can be something dangareous if you take advantage on your famous status in the world. In conclusion, do give you Twitter a try and see if, like the other 55 million of us, you become just as obsessed about tweeting as we are.
